Un-Cookie Policy

Product Data Policy

Last updated: January 1, 2023

Introduction

Our web analytics software relies on non-personal information when you visit, use, or navigate our website, some of which is collected and stored on your device using the best available technologies to enhance your browsing experience and protect your privacy.

Documents that describe how information is collected and stored on visitor devices are generally called “cookie” policies. However, the technologies used to collect and store data on your device vary, and there are important differences between cookies and newer technologies.

We call this document our “Un-Cookie Policy” because, while we want you to recognize its contents, cookies refer to the oldest and clumsiest technology used to store and collect information on your device. Simply put, we avoid cookies as much as possible, in favor of better technologies. We rely mainly on Web Storage to interact with your device. You can learn more about how and why we do this here.

Finally, we do our best to ensure that the information collected and stored on your device does not let us (or anyone else) learn your identity:

We never collect your IP address or information that could be used to determine your precise location or identity

We don't identify specific visitors or create personal profiles

Most of the information collected and stored on your computer is temporary and expires after half an hour of inactivity or once you exit our website by closing your browser tab

Moreover, we never sell personal information and we never engage in or facilitate targeted advertising.

Anonymous Analytics Tracking

As you visit, use, or navigate our website, we might collect non-personal analytics information, including the following, which is collected and stored on your device:

The types of devices, operating systems, and browsers used to access our website

The touch capabilities of each device used to access our website

The pages on our website that are visited, including how these pages were reached;

We do not follow you across the Internet. We learn only about how you were referred to our website or the path you took within our website to reach a particular page or specific content.

The country and continent from which users access our site;

We do not collect more specific location information such as a user’s Internet Protocol (IP) Address.

Interactions with website content, including the number of seconds a user actively engages with a specific piece of content like a video or a blog post; and

Actions on our website, such as watching a video or clicking on a link.

Our web analytics software collects anonymous data only. This means that the data gathered does not identify you personally. For more information on how our web analytics software works, please read our Product Data Policy

What other tracking technologies do we use?

Web Storage is not the only way to recognize or track visitors to a website. We may use other similar technologies from time to time, especially because the technology in this area is undergoing significant changes. For example, we might use web beacons (sometimes called “clear gifs” or “tracking pixels”). These are tiny graphics files that contain a unique identifier that enables us to recognize when someone has visited our Website or clicked on a specific link. This allows us, for example, to monitor the traffic patterns of our website visitors from one page within a website to another, to deliver or communicate with different components of our website, or to improve site performance.

In many cases, these technologies are reliant on Web Storage-like functions that store and retrieve information on your device. Declining collection and storage on your device will impair the functionality of these tools.

Why do we collect and store information using your device?

Using your browser to collect and store specific kinds of information helps us enhance your privacy while creating a smoother and better functioning website. For example, we use our own web analytics software on our website to better understand how people interact with our website's content, including what works and what doesn’t work. Our software helps us do this without undermining your privacy or the efficinecy and speed of our website. For more information about how our web analytics software functions on other websites, read our Product Data Policy

How can you opt-out from our analytics cookies?

In some jurisdictions, the European Union for example, you have the right to refuse any non-essential storage and collection on your device, before such activity starts. If you are located in such a jurisdiction, a banner should appear on the website asking for your consent for our anonymous analytics tools. The appearance of this banner will depend on your location and on whether you are visiting our website or another website that uses our analytics product.

Regardless of your location, you can opt-out (or opt-in) to Web Storage and similar technologies, by ___.

You may also set or amend your web browser controls to accept or refuse collection or storage of information on your device.

By choosing to opt-out, you may still use our website, though your access to some functionality and areas of our website may be restricted.

How can you remove Web Storage and other technologies from your device?

Most of our files are temporary and are destroyed as soon as the first half hour of inactivity and no later than when you exit our website by closing your browser.

The only file that remains on your device longer than this keeps a simple non-personal count of the number of times your browser visits our website. You can delete this (along with any other devices that have already been stored on your device) by clearing your browser’s browsing history. Be aware though that, if you choose to do this, you may also lose some saved information (e.g. saved login details, site preferences).

How can you block Web Storage and other technologies?

You can set most modern browsers to prevent any “cookies” from being placed on your device. This will block Web Storage and similar technologies. But you may then have to manually adjust some preferences every time you visit a site/page. And some services and functionalities may not work properly at all (e.g. profile log-in).

Do we serve targeted advertising?

Definitely not!

But other websites you visit might. Third parties may place technologies on your computer or mobile device that serve advertising through our website. These companies may use information about your visit to this and other websites for a number of purposes. As explained on our Privacy Notice, we are not responsible, in any way, for such activity.

Where can I get further information?

If you have any questions about our use of Web Storage or other technologies, please email us at hello@volument.com. You can also use our privacy form.
